Saharan Dust

About once a year storms from the Saharan Desert blow dust into the Caribbean. Tiny particles of dust loom in the air anywhere from 1 week to 3 weeks. This is what I’ve heard, at least, and haven’t been able to confirm because I can’t find anything recently published on the Caribbean “Inversion”. The dust creates the El Nino effect, which basically means it prevents storms from forming, making it almost impossible to get rain and thus creating a very dry season for the islands. Okay, so, enough with the science lesson…

How did the Saharan Dust effect us? We have been so blessed in Puerto Rico and no one has gotten sick since we’ve been here. We’re so grateful for that!!! When the dust arrived we were fine for about a week but after that we all got really bad sore throats and coughs. We honestly don’t know if this was a cold or if it was due to the air. All of our neighbors, who also had these symptoms, assure us that it was due to the dust and it would soon pass. Well, the dust is gone and 5 out of 6 of us have stopped coughing. That’s pretty good, unless you’re Ryan (he’s the one who hasn’t quite overcome the cough yet). The dust is so tiny that it creates a hazy look in the sky that makes for an amazing sunset. Other things the dust did was make it hot for about 2 weeks without a breeze and dried up everything green. It’s started to rain since then and everything is coming back to life. As far as I can tell you can’t really plan a vacation to the island around the dust. This year we had it at the end of April and into May but I’ve seen reports of it in June and even in September. I guess all you can hope for is that it doesn’t last long and that you get to catch on of the gorgeous sunsets!
