Playa Sucia

I have to write about Playa Sucia because every beach here in Puerto Rico is different and this is one of my favorites.

The first time I visited this beach it was really clean. People called it the dirty beach and we didn’t know why until today. First of all this beach is next to a swampy area that smells like the Great Salt Lake (a reference for those of you in Utah), kind of a rotten egg smell. Am I making you want to visit this beach yet? The other thing is that today, as you can see by the pictures, there is a lot of sea weed lining the beach which makes it look very dirty.

If you look a little closer you’ll find that the sand is beautiful. It’s white and super fine. Ryan said it best when he said, “It’s almost like a liquid.” If you walk a bit it doesn’t smell at all.

Because of the cove that it’s in, this beach has no rip tide and very small waves. We don’t have to worry about the kids here. Of course we’re still keeping an eye on them but no need to worry.

We heard today that on a day when the water is clear you can find conch shells.

The beach is also awesome because it’s lined with trees so we just find a little bunch of trees and camp out there for the day. It’s so comfortable here and not too crowded.

Playa Sucia is right next to the Cabo Rojo light house. If you’re trying to get there go to the lighthouse parking lot and then take the road off to the left. It’ll lead to a place to park. There aren’t a lot of parking spaces but we’ve had a lot of luck getting a spot. If you can’t park near the beach you can park in the light house parking lot. When I way parking lot I mean flat dirt area without any bushes. I don’t want you to get lost looking for an actual paved parking lot. 🙂
