Planting a Coconut

Since we got to Puerto Rico we have been looking for a sprouting coconut. We’ve found a lot of these…

Today we found a live one! We’re so excited! It takes about 3 months for a coconut to sprout so we lucked out! Isn’t she beautiful?!

To plant a coconut:

Plant so that 1/4 of the coconut is sticking out of the dirt.

Make sure that the soil you’re planting it in will drain well. We went out to the beach for a bucket of sand. We mixed it so that it’s about 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 sand. I hope it drains well enough!

Coconuts need a lot of water but they don’t need to sit on it, it needs to drain really well.

We’re not known for keeping plants alive but hopefully (cross our fingers) someday we’ll have a coconut tree!
