It’s hard to know what the weather is like in Puerto Rico by looking at past statistics or even just by checking the temperature. Before we came we tried to figure it all out by doing research. When we would look we knew that the temperature didn’t vary too much. It looked like it would be between 78-85 all year with a rainy season and a less rainy season. I’ve been keeping track so that I could tell you what the temperature feels like and what the seasons are like here, on the West coast of Puerto Rico.
I’m going to keep it simple…
When we got here on September 2nd we noticed how humid it was when we walked out of the airport. The air felt sticky and really hot. We had heard that it would cool off in October. It was still really hot and humid as we went Trick-or-Treating on Halloween night. I was still sweating over the stove for the Halloween dinner. It rained every day but not all day, just in the afternoon. It was sunny every morning and early afternoon. At around 2:00pm the clouds would roll in and we would have an awesome rain storm. It rained like i’ve never seen it in my life. We would sit on our balcony and watch in amazment. The rain was also warm, not cold, like it was in Utah. The storm would usually last an hour. Rarely 2-3. There was one stretch that it lasted 3 days but that was in November and everyone here was caliing it, “very unusual”. This never stopped our fun and unless there was lightening we’d still go to the beach, waterfalls, whatever no matter the weather.
I would say that it really started to cool off the third week of November. By cool off, I don’t mean that I was cold but there came point that I, and the rest of the family weren’t sweating all of the time and didn’t even think of using the AC during the day (which we rarely did but thought a lot about before). It was significantly less humid come the middle of November and we started getting a good, cool breeze through our house.
Then came the best weather winter of our lives. Perfect temperatures and humidity all the way through March 21st. By perfect, I mean it was probably 82-85 and I don’t know what the humidity was but we didn’t even notice it anymore. No more pony tails and buns and no more sweating in the house. We also had an amazing breeze everywhere we went all the time. It was awesome! Not too hot, not too cold. There were even a couple of times that I even wore a jacket when Ryan and I would go out at night. Usually if we were going to a restaurant that had a good breeze on the ocean.
On March 21st we noticed a change. Not too big, just a few times where the temperature would get hot enough for us to be uncomfortable. Other than that it was still perfect.
For 3 weeks, Starting in the middle of April, we had the Sahara dust roll in. You can read about it HERE. During this time there was no breeze and it got really hot. We thought that summer was here for sure and it was the end of the luxurious weather. Thank goodness we were wrong!
As soon as the dust was out of here the breeze returned and although in the last couple of days (beginning of June) it’s gotten considerably more humid, we are still comfortable in our home and out.
It’s June first and the thunderstorms have started. Which means that it’s sunny until about 2:00pm every day and then the clouds roll in and we have an awesome thunderstorm. Sometimes with a little rain and sometimes with a lot. Either way we love it and it brings with it a breeze and something fun for John and Dylan to do. They’ll put on swimsuits and of play in it. I can’t complain yet! From what we’ve heard July, August and September are the hottest and most humid months. I’ll give you an update if I live through it. LOL
***UPDATE*** It’s August 1st now and I still can’t complain. We’ve had a couple of really hot days but not too bad. The ocean breeze is still here. I talked to a local girl the other day and she said that it should get hotter. I think the reason that it’s not as hot is because Puerto Rico is in a terrible drought right now. I know, drought on a tropical island, what?! I guess every few year this happens. I think because it hasn’t been raining, the humidity is way down, leaving the weather a little cooler. Just my thoughts, not facts. 🙂
