We started out the day at 4:30am! It was sooo early because we wanted to get to San Juan before traffic. It was a good thing we did because we only had 30 minutes to spare before the ferry left at 9:00am. We actually planned on going to another Island, Vieques but the cargo ferry was full and we wanted to take our car with us to Vieques. We quickly changed our plans and bought tickets for the Culebra passenger ferry. The ferry ride was about an hour and 5 minutes long. I should have know we were in for a rough ride when the attendant walked around passing out barf bags. 🙂 At first the kids were so exicted, jumping up and down with the waves because we sat at the front of the boat. About 30 minutes in, most of them were hunched over very sea sick. Ryan and my friend Jen who’s family went with us, were really sick as well. I would recommend sitting near the back of the boat where the waves barely rock the boat.
Before we boarded the ferry, Ryan had booked us a jeep for the day! We loved it. We took the top off and drove all over the island.
We hear that this restaurant, “The Dinghy Dock”, is the best around but we didn’t have time to eat there. Maybe next time.
We finally ended up at Flamenco beach. It’s rated 3 in the top 10 beaches in the world and I know why! The sand is like flour and the warm water was crystal clear. It’s like a dream come true. I reminding my self of how lucky we were to be there. Absolutely beautiful!
We played at the beach for about 2 hours because we wanted to head over to another beach that we had heard was great for snorkeling.
It was too sunny for Ashley to look at the camera. 🙂
The next beach we went to was in a little cove. It’s called, Tamarindo and was right next to Flamenco. This beach is totally different. It’s rocky. Still clear but very rocky. I had the kids watch their feet carefully because I had seem some urchins in the underwater grass just beyond the rocks.
While we were here we saw, huge Sting Ray’s, a Sea Turtle, a Star fish and a puffer fish. It was awesome to see all of the things I’ve been teaching my kids about in school!
We didn’t stay long because we were cutting it really close with getting the rental car back in time to catch the ferry, at 5:00pm but it was totally worth it. I would have booked a hotel and stayed another day if we had brought a change of clothes. We made it back to the ferry with 20 min. to spare. Not bad!
The ferry ride back was WAY better. I had gotten some dramamine from a shop on Culebra and we sat at the back of the boat. Much better! Awesome day! We can’t wait to go back to Culebra!
