Today we traveled an hour away to see another cave, in Arecibo. One of our favorite things to do in Puerto Rico has been to see caves.
They’re beautiful and abundant. I was lucky enough to hear from a friend about Cueva Del Indio.
It’s in eastern Arecibo right near the coast. MAP
It’s really easy to find because a family who lives next to the caves has opened up their land for parking and provided a big sign. The cost to park, is $3/car plus $1/person. Totally worth having a safe place to park and directions to the cave. They even gave us a little history lesson on the cave.
Some reviews I read almost scared me off from going but I’m glad they didn’t! We took all 4 kids and all were totally fine. I think a little 4 or under may have a hard time on the ladder. Even then, I’m sure mom or dad can judge. 🙂 We felt very safe at all times.
Getting to the cave was an easy walk. We traveled down this ladder. I was a little nervous because it’s hooked on by a rope. I thought it might move around a bit but it was totally sturdy.
At the bottom there were these awesome petroglyphs.
It’s incredible that the Taino Indians actually lived down there! We’ve really come to respect them as we’ve lived here.
There is some water to cross to get to the other side of the cave but nothing that was too big of a deal.
Above head there were bats, huge bee hives, and crabs on a lot of the rocks.
We topped it off by visiting seven arches which is to the right of the cave, if you’re facing the ocean. It’s an amazing sight. 7 Arches have been carved out of the rocks by the ocean.
We continued to the right where there are a few secluded beaches. The boys played in one of them. It was a protected beach so the waves would crash in the distance creating a little pool to play in, find shells and look at crabs.
I’m so glad we made the trip! There’s no better way for the kids to learn then from hands on experience. I’m grateful every day that we’re here, in Puerto Rico, learning so many new and interesting things!!
We own a house in Arecibo. We rent it out as a vacation rental now, but are getting ready to make the move there this year. Love visiting Cueva del Indio and the beach you visited is one we go to often. It’s nice to be able to let our son swim without worrying so much about the waves:-) Love reading about other families who have made PR their full time home, so thank you!
Good luck with your move! Arecibo is a great location! I love that it’s far from San Juan but close to everything at the same time. You’re so welcome! Keep us posted!
