Today was awesome! We had a little day trip to 3 different places.
Camuy Caves or Cueva Caverna,
The Arecibo Observatory, and the Arecibo lighthouse.
We planned to leave Saturday morning at 7 but because I some hang-ups didn’t leave until 9 from Isabela.
Our GPS took us to a random dead end road. That’s not unusual here in Puerto Rico. I’m so glad we had Internet signal where we were. We found some great directions online. (directions)
We finally got to the Camuy Caves around 10:00. I was really worried because it’s Saturday and we’ve read about it being very crowded. When we arrived it was almost empty. We bought our tickets just as the tram was ready to leave. There were exactly 6 seats left on the tram. Yay! So we headed off very quickly. Which I love anytime I’m with the kids.
This cave was beautiful! The cave system has over 220 caves and 16 different entrances. It’s home to thousands of bats and a few movies have been made here. They said they are going to be filming some scenes for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie soon.
I can’t even describe it so here are a few pictures. I wish my camera was better. It’s hard to tell how awesome it was.
The walk around the cave is guided and about a mile in distance. The kids were fascinated by what the guide was saying so it was easy to keep track of them.
The walkway is a little slippery and the railing has bat poo on it so I was scared to hold onto it. I just walked really carefully. I had all if the kids wear really good shoes but I wore flip flops because in the rush I forgot to change my shoes. A typical mom thing to do. 🙂
Some of the fun extra things we got to see were: a bat hanging low.
A spider scorpion and a wall full of huge crickets. I was a little freaked out about the crickets but they stayed on the wall. 🙂
The next stop was the Arecibo Observatory. There are signs posted from the Camuy Caves directing to the Observatory. So nice not to feel lost!!
After a 500 step climb we were there!
Here is our reward

This was an awesome site!
My favorite thing about it is that my kids were so interested! It’s fun to see them get excited about new things.
We had lunch here. Not gourmet but we’re all so much happier when we’re full.
There was a really cool science museum inside. I think Ryan and the kids could have played there all day.
Arecibo light house –
This wasn’t just a light house
Bumper boats
Historical Ship Replicas
A Little Aquarium
Lots of fun for everyone!
We also found a beach that we want to come back to.
Because there isn’t a lot of shopping close to home I have to plan around where I am so we had to stop at Home Depot on the way home. Dylan said this was the only not fun thing about the day.
Great adventures today!
